Green Party Presidential Candidate Arrested

(NewsWorthy.news) – A presidential candidate from the Green party was arrested over the weekend at a campus protest.

Jill Stein, who is running for president on the party’s anti-violence, pro-climate agenda, was handcuffed on Saturday April 27 while partaking in an encampment on the campus of Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. The protest is not the first of its kind to erupt on college campuses since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas.

Jason Call, the candidate’s campaign manager, told the media that he and his deputy campaign manager, Kelly Merrill-Cayer, were also arrested with Stein. The demonstration reportedly sought to have the institution “divest from Boeing,” the plane manufacturing company whose munitions are being actively used in what Call described as “the ongoing genocide” Israel is launching against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

A Boeing facility is located in the nearby city of St. Charles, which is only half an hour from the university. Call added that Stein “supports the demands” of the college students and her campaign backed their right to “peaceful protest.” Stein and her campaign leaders were three of more than 100 people arrested at the Washington University protest this weekend.

Tensions have continued to flare in the United States as the war in the Middle East rages on. Starting immediately after the Hamas-led massacre in Israel on October 7, 2023, Americans on both sides of the controversy became increasingly divided. While many citizens and leaders stand firmly in support of America’s long-time ally, Israel—which has vowed not to stop its military attacks until Hamas is destroyed—others have argued that the Jewish nation has gone too far with its retaliation.

Even President Joe Biden, who has publicly expressed solidarity with Israel and condemned the terror attack, has warned America’s ally not to act in a way that would expand the conflict and fail to limit civilian casualties.

Across the nation, protests are erupting on college campuses, leading the University of Southern California to cancel in-person commencement and many arrests at both Columbia University, Arizona State University, and the University of Texas in recent days.
