(NewsWorthy.news) – Former President Donald Trump has shut down rumors that he is weighing up South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley as a possible running mate.
In a brief post on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote that she was not being considered and that he wished her well. Trump’s comments followed reports that Haley was being actively considered by Trump’s campaign for Vice President. Haley was the last remaining rival of Trump to drop out of the primary race on Super Tuesday after other former rivals such as Vivek Ramaswamy and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis had already stepped down and publicly endorsed Trump.
The most persistent in her primary campaign against the former president, Haley presented a more moderate alternative to Republicans, and on finally bowing out of the race stressed that Trump would have to earn the votes of his fellow Republicans. Since then, little has changed between the two former rivals, and Haley already stated in January 2024 that she would not want to be vice president under Donald Trump’s leadership.
Then-rival DeSantis, who dropped out of the race days later, suggested that Haley was campaigning to be vice-president, not president. Haley said otherwise, stressing that she was only focused on winning. Haley differs from Trump on some key issues such as legal immigration and foreign policy. Despite her still having a sizable following and donors that could benefit the former president, Trump has yet to reach out to Haley, who has not publicly endorsed Trump. President Joe Biden’s campaign took advantage of the rivalry between Haley and Trump, and aired footage of Trump attacking the former rival in several counties in Pennsylvania, where Haley had made gains in the suburbs.
As of May 14, Ramaswamy, North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum and Florida Representative Byron Donalds were rumored to be potential Vice-President choices. The potential candidates were among the Republicans who arrived in Manhattan to support Trump in his Hush Money criminal trial on the second day of former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen’s testimony.
