(NewsWorthy.news) – A contract requested by the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) is stirring up controversy for its stipulation that it include popular left-wing services free of charge.
The $50 billion demand would provide free abortions, dole out money to immigrants, promote divisive gender ideology, and increase teacher pay in the notoriously embattled school district. The contract, details of which were first revealed last month, is asking for an annual salary increase of nine percent, lasting through 2028.
However, Chicago Public Schools teachers typically earn $93,182 a year, averaging roughly $20,000 more each year compared to other teachers in the state of Illinois. The Illinois Policy Institute has estimated that, if the request is granted, school teachers in the Windy City would be among the highest paid in the United States, giving them an annual salary of $144,620 per year by 2027.
In addition to the demands for higher pay, the contract stipulates that the city fund mandatory training of teachers around gender issues—which would be included as an annual requirement to maintain teaching qualifications in the district.
Other requests include the requirement of “gender neutral” bathrooms in every school and enacting a ban on telling parents that their children are being taught divisive gender concepts in the classroom, as well as money to fund abortions and provide immigrant students with $2,000 for transportation, academic costs, and “mental health counseling.”
The CTU contract demands come months after the release of a February report detailing the alarmingly low proficiency among students in the subjects of math and reading. The data in the report—collected by the Illinois Department of Education in 2022—showed that 55 public schools in the Windy City had zero students who were proficient in math or reading.
According to the data, 22 schools in Chicago did not have any kids able to read at their grade levels while an additional 33 said that none of their students were doing math at their grade levels. Throughout the state of Illinois, no students were math proficient at 53 different schools, and 30 more reported no kids could read proficiently.
