(NewsWorthy.news) – Disgraced former lawmaker George Santos has announced his decision to drop his independent bid for Congress due to lack of funding.
The run and subsequent drop out came months after he was expelled from the House of Representatives amid federal charges that he had committed fraud. Santos had previously represented New York as a Republican lawmaker, a position he filled from January 2023 until December of that same year.
On Tuesday April 23, the disgraced lawmaker posted on X his decision to rescind his bid for Congress. Santos explained that he was leaving the race so as not to “split the ticket” on election day and “be responsible” for the Democrats winning the House. He added that his remaining in the race as an independent “all but guarantees” the Left-wing party to win.
Santos went on to assure the public that “the future holds countless possibilities” and he is prepared to serve the country “at any time.” He finished his message by saying that his departure from the race is “goodbye for now,” promising Americans that he will “be back.”
At the end of March 2024, Santos announced he would run for New York’s 1st Congressional District as an independent rather than a Republican. His effort initially posed a challenge to Rep. Nick LaLota of the GOP before Santos declared he would switch parties.
Shortly after its launch, Santos’ campaign committee revealed that there had been no fundraising successes that month, giving rise to the belief that his bid was not going to gain traction.
In December 2023, the lawmaker was dismissed from the House after an ethics committee found he “cannot be trusted,” based on “overwhelming evidence” that he had broken the law. In response to federal charges against him, Santos has pleaded not guilty. He is accused of lying to Congress about his personal wealth, taking campaign funds for personal use, and garnering unemployment benefits for which he did not qualify.
