(NewsWorthy.news) – The daughter of far-Left Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar has been suspended from her college after helping to organize an unauthorized pro-Palestine demonstration on campus.
Isra Hirsi, 21, is enrolled at Barnard College—a women’s liberal arts institution connected to New York’s Columbia University—but has been suspended following protests that landed dozens of participants under arrest.
She made the announcement on social media on Thursday April 18, revealing that she is “1 of 3 students suspended” for what she described as “standing in solidarity” alongside the Palestinian people “facing a genocide.”
Hirsi reportedly works with the CU Apartheid Divest—a group that advocates for Palestine’s liberation and an end to stakes in Israel—and has not been given “disciplinary warnings” or “reprimanded” during the last three years at the school. However, last week, she was one of over 100 demonstrators who were arrested by the New York Police Department (NYPD) after putting up a tent city on campus.
The two other suspended students—Soph Dinu and Maryam Iqbal—were notified of their punishment along with Hirsi by Leslie Grinage, the dead of Barnard College, according to the Apartheid Divest. In a statement, the student group quoted Grinage’s email to the three students.
The suspensions were dealt after the review of “information” from the public safety department at Columbia University, which reportedly gave evidence that the students were engaged in “unauthorized encampment” at the campus of the Ivy League school. The email also cited that the three students had “not ceased participation” in the violation “despite repeated requests” issued by both institutions on Wednesday April 17.
Hirsi had previously advertised her actions on social media, having posted video clips of herself at the event and describing it as a “huge historic moment.” After Omar’s daughter had been suspended, she went back to X to defend her behavior, saying the protestors “will not be intimidated.”
