Trump Takes Speaker Johnson’s Side in Spat with MTG

(NewsWorthy.news) – As internal tensions between House Republicans continue to flare, former president Donald Trump has expressed support for House Speaker Mike Johnson.

The representative from Louisiana—who was promoted to his leadership role in October 2023 after the historic ousting of former California Rep. Kevin McCarthy—has faced significant backlash from the GOP for his support of controversial legislation. Notably, Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has spearheaded a motion to have him resign or face being vacated.

On Monday April 22, Trump—who has received strong support from Greene in the past—said to John Fredericks on his radio show that Johnson is “a very good person” who does not have the authority to “do whatever he wants” in the House. Trump also pointed out that the GOP currently holds a slim majority, with only one more representative than the Democrats.

The presumed Republican presidential nominee recalled how Johnson supported him in his accountability calls on the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and acknowledged that the House Speaker is “trying very hard” in the midst of “a tough situation.”

Speaking to Fredericks, the former president expressed the need to “elect some good senators” by replacing some who are currently in office. He also drove home the importance of “win[ning] the presidency” or facing the end of America, which he described as a “country in decline.”

However, Trump’s comments on air came after he was in court for his infamous hush money trial in Manhattan, which heard opening statements this week. The criminal case has frustrated American voters, 50% of whom have expressed their belief that Trump would not be fit to serve as president if he is convicted of the 34 felony charges he faces.

On Sunday, Greene called for Johnson to resign from his role as House Speaker following the chamber’s passage of a foreign aid package that awarded billions of dollars to allies, including Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan.
