Illegal Migrant Charged with Fatal Stabbing

(NewsWorthy.news) – An illegal immigrant has been charged with fatally stabbing a fellow migrant at a hotel in Florida, police say.

On April 13, Ricardo Agustin Lorenzo was arrested and charged with second-degree murder by the Sumter County Sherif’s Office. He—along with his victim, Bilder Pablo—was unlawfully in the United States from his home country of Guatemala. Lorenzo is believed to have stabbed Pablo at a Days Inn in Wildwood, Florida.

When law enforcement arrived on the scene, they found Pablo seriously injured and airlifted him to a Gainesville hospital to receive medical attention. He later died of his injuries. Following the incident, police located the suspect, who had taken cover in a wooded region near a local interstate. He was arrested when found by the authorities.

Lorenzo is currently in custody without bail and will be released to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency should he get out of jail in the future, per a detainer placed on him by the federal agency.

According to police, Sumter County law enforcement requested that ICE place the detainer on the suspect. The incident comes months after Florida authorities arrested another illegal immigrant from Guatemala who is the suspect in a hit-and-run that resulted in a compound fracture for the victim. According to ICE, around 145,000 encounters with migrants from this country have occurred at America’s southern border during fiscal year 2024.

The rise in illegal immigration continues to stir up controversy, with many conservative citizens and politicians calling for greater scrutiny to protect Americans from the violent crime that has simultaneously occurred with migrants in certain situations. In March, Florida’s Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a set of bills intended to resist the growing problem.

He said at the time that the federal government “failed in its responsibility” to ensure that the nation’s border is secure, resulting in individual states needing to “fend for themselves.” He expressed his state’s disagreement with illegal migration as well as the “lawlessness” in which illegal residents engage.
