(NewsWorthy.news.com) – Leading political analyst Nia-Malika Henderson has argued that President Joe Biden’s appearances following his disastrous debate with former President Donald Trump only validate mounting concerns about his mental fitness. As he faced more calls from Democrats and donors to step out of the presidential race, Biden finally announced on July 21 that he is dropping out of the presidential campaign and endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris.
Special Counsel Robert Hur released a report into Biden’s misplacing of classified documents when he was vice president in February, which concluded that Biden was a “well meaning” old man with a “poor memory”. Former White House physician and Republican Texas Representative Ronny Jackson commented on the report’s findings, stating that the incumbent president has “serious issues” that are getting progressively worse each day. Jackson argued that Biden is “cognitively unfit” to serve another term in the White House.
Actor George Clooney, having hosted a major fundraiser for Biden’s campaign only a month previously, reluctantly called on the president to step down in July. Clooney concurred with senior Democrats and major donors, who have become increasingly worried that Trump’s reelection is guaranteed if Biden does not let another Democrat run for president.
A significant test of Biden’s mental fitness and memory following the televised debate with Trump was his appearance at the NATO Summit in Washington DC, which was largely focused on Ukraine. Some on the Left continued to dismiss concerns about the president’s health; newly appointed British Prime Minister Keir Starmer claimed Biden was mentally “agile” and on “good form” at the event.
Soon after Starmer’s comments, however, Biden embarrassed himself again at a press conference at the summit, in which he confused Vice President Kamala Harris with Trump, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Henderson commented that Biden’s media appearances have been “hit and miss” in general, and dismissed the excuses given by Biden’s campaign that he was just having a bad night due to a cold or jet lag. She acknowledged that the president had made some “relatively strong” appearances, but stressed that Biden continues to make gaffes. She also noted that the president still talks in a “low voice”, and that seeming somewhat “infirm” on the campaign trail is not going to convince voters the debate performance was just a one-off.
