(Newsworthy.news) – A coach and an umpire at a Little League baseball game this week were caught on camera fighting in front of the players.
The event, which took place in North Carolina on Monday July 15, was described as “embarrassing.” The players who witnessed the fight were 12 years old and younger. They were competing in a state championship when the brawl broke out.
Local news obtained footage of the incident, which occurred at the top of the fifth inning. In the video, one coach can be seen engaging in an argument with the umpire at home plate. The coach then gets more upset, coming into the official’s face. The umpire reportedly informs the angry coach that he should be kicked out of the game because he was using profanity.
He then headed back towards the plate, followed by the coach, who pushed the umpire. At that point, another official enters the scene, apparently trying to separate the two while the first umpire swung his mask at the coach. Then, a fellow coach from the Cherryville team intervened in an effort to stop the umpire’s blows. The three then retreated from the camera’s shot.
But the fight did not end there. Shortly after, the umpire and coach can be seen in the camera once again, this time wrestling on the ground. Multiple men came onto the field to get them off each other. The opposing team—which was from Bull City—did not have any parents, players, or coaches involved in the skirmish.
The fight reportedly lasted just over a minute. Local law enforcement arrived on the scene after the incident had passed. Although no charges were filed related to the occurrence, both the coach and the umpire may be suspended by city officials.
David Lee, the director of Wilson Parks and Recreation, said in a statement that there is “no tolerance” for such incidents within the department. He emphasized the fact that many people are “working hard” to provide “a positive experience” for young athletes, noting it is “unfortunate and honestly embarrassing” to have had the game “ruined” by two adults.
