(NewsWorthy.news.com) – A Florida Senator who is up for reelection appears to be gaining long-awaited political success thanks to his close relationship with the leading presidential candidate Donald Trump.
Rick Scott has served his first term in Congress since 2019—but he has not been held up as a significantly influential Republican. Although he chaired the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) from 2021 until 2023, the Sunshine State lawmaker backed the idea that a so-called “red wave” of GOP political victories would come with the 2022 midterm elections.
During this time—which did not, in fact, materialize as Scott and others said it would—the Florida Senator also financially supported Trump’s political efforts. He quickly became associated with massive political flops during the 2022 election cycle, as multiple candidates he supported fell far short of victory.
Scott campaigned for Herschel Walker, a former NFL player who ran for office in Georgia and was backed by Trump. He maintained that Walker would continue to be a strong leader despite his massive loss. Similarly, that election year was described as a “complete disappointment” by Scott after another Trump-backed candidate, Dr. Mehmet Oz, lost to the sitting Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania.
However, the Florida Senator is now showing promise to earn back some of the disgrace of the past several years. His consistent support of Trump and other candidates backed by the former president may pay off in the long run. Most notably, Scott was chosen as a speaker at the Republican National Convention (RNC), which was held from July 15 through 18 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Trump specifically requested that Scott attend and speak at the event, according to internal sources. During his speech, the Florida Senator praised the former president for the “booming economy,” lack of armed conflict, respect from other countries and allies, border security, and low inflation the United States enjoyed under his administration.
Scott is reportedly “hopeful” that Trump—who is the leading candidate in the November 2024 presidential election—will publicly endorse him in his own reelection campaign.
