Volunteer Foreign Fighters in Ukraine Accused of War Criminality

(NewsWorthy.news) – Fresh reports have surfaced of war crimes allegedly committed by foreign volunteers, from the United States and other countries in Ukraine in the fight against Russian aggression. According to the report, a unit led by US troops massacred surrendering Russian soldiers. Caspar Grosse, a German volunteer and medic in an all-foreign mercenary unit, is the main source for many of the eyewitness accounts. Grosse stated that his conscience forced him to expose the alleged crimes.

According to Grosse, in one incident a member of the Chosen Company shot dead a gravely injured Russian soldier who was crawling along a trench and pleading for help in English. In another incident recounted by Grosse, a Greek mercenary in the unit known as Zeus threw a grenade at two Russian soldiers, killing them. One of the soldiers had clearly surrendered and the other was injured and immobile.

The war in Ukraine has seen accusations of war crimes committed by both sides in the conflict. Alexey Savichev, a Russian former convict and alleged Wagner mercenary, told reporters that he had shot numerous Ukrainian prisoners of war on the spot. Savichev claimed that in another incident he threw a grenade into a trench housing dozens of Ukrainian POWs. His account could not be independently verified, however.

By October 2022, Russian President Putin was facing a potential revolt after wives and mothers of men drafted from the pro-Russian Donbas region reported that they had been raped by Chechen soldiers utilized by the Kremlin in its invasion of Ukraine. Russian forces were also accused of raping and killing civilians on the outskirts of Kyiv in 2022.

In 2022 the UK’s then-defense secretary Ben Wallace warned that British citizens traveling to Ukraine to fight in the conflict could face charges on their return to their home country. The comments came in spite of then-Prime Minister Liz Truss expressing support for Britons wishing to fight on Ukraine’s side in the conflict.

Reporters contacted members of Chosen Company who either witnessed or participated in the alleged extra-judicial killings. One mercenary warned against “snitching on bros” in a group chat message. The person threatened anyone who discussed killings with reporters with years of jail time. The mercenary stressed that they were brothers and that any attempts to investigate “confidential information” would be stopped.
