(NewsWorthy.news) – Amid heightened anticipation surrounding the upcoming rematch for the November 2024 presidential election, even mainstream media has hinted that President Joe Biden should rescind his re-election bid.
A recent editorial article written by staff at The Washington Post imagined a speech that the commander-in-chief would give if he stepped down from his campaign. The piece, titled “What if Biden spoke these words,” came after what was widely accepted as a painfully bad debate performance.
Biden participated in his first debate since 2020 on June 27. He joined his GOP rival, former president Donald Trump, in a studio with no live audience. Despite having laid out a number of conditions on which he would agree to a debate, Biden’s performance—which was laden with cognitive lapses and lackluster responses—did not inspire confidence for his party or supporters.
The imagined speech describes the hypothetical withdrawal as the end of the president’s “season of service,” which was compared to the natural “progression” between the seasons. The Post’s editorial board then purports that Biden might say something typically out of character, in maintaining that the United States “needs” a president who has “the energy to run” both the campaign trail as well as the country.
Amid ongoing complaints that Biden is mentally and physically unfit to lead America, the president has maintained that he is capable of being the commander-in-chief. However, according to the imaginary speech, he “agreed” with top Democratic leaders and the party’s national committee to “select our next nominee.” The hypothetical situation also notes that Vice President Kamala Harris “agreed to participate” in stepping off the campaign.
As noted by The Blaze, several Democratic lawmakers took the recent debate as a sign to call on Biden to abandon his re-election effort. Texas Rep. Lloyd Doggett said that he is “hopeful” the president will “withdraw,” adding that he “respectfully” requests that he “do so.” Fellow Democrat Rep. Raúl Grijalva also noted that he would “support” Biden if he remains the party candidate but emphasized that “part of” the president’s “responsibility” for his position is “to get out of this race.”
