Leftist Group Readies Legal Challenge Against Biden’s Immigration Order

(NewsWorthy.news) – In response to President Joe Biden’s latest immigration-related action, a far-left organization is planning to file a lawsuit against the order.

On Tuesday June 4, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) announced that it would sue the administration due to the president’s recent policy—established the same day as the announced lawsuit—that will limit the number of asylum claims allowed to be submitted at the nation’s southern border.

The ACLU reacted to the news on X, describing the order as one that will leave “tens of thousands of lives at risk” and emphasizing how the policy undermines the “legal right” of immigrants “to seek asylum.” The left-wing group also likened Biden’s new rule to that of former president Donald Trump, who issued his own restrictions on asylum seekers.

According to the ACLU’s chief officer of politics and advocacy, Deirdre Schifeling, the new order does not “address the challenges” or “meet the needs” at the southern border. She added that the policy will also fall short of reforming what she claimed is a “broken immigration system” in the United States.

The lawsuit immediately follows an executive order from the president, who has a track record of controversial immigration policies that many argue have only exacerbated the uncontrollable migration and its subsequent consequences. The new rule will allow border officials to turn away immigrants seeking asylum when they try to illegally enter when the southern border is overwhelmed with encounters.

This asylum limitation will be effective when, based on the average of daily border crossings in a week, there are more than 2,500 individuals crossing between various entry ports. As the migration numbers already exceed this threshold, the order will take immediate effect.

According to senior officials within the Biden administration, the ACLU’s legal challenge did not come as a surprise, and the White House will readily defend its order in court. One official said that orders regarding the controversial issue of immigration have triggered lawsuits from both sides of the political spectrum.
