Iran Forcefully Retaliates After Israel Attacks Damascus Facility

Tehran, Iran 12 7 2020

(NewsWorthy.news) – Following an Israeli attack that killed Iranian leaders in Damascus, Syria, Iran declared it would retaliate in an “appropriate” response.

On April 11, the nation’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian told the German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock that Iran would not hesitate to “punish” the Jewish nation for the strike that killed several, including top military leaders, but acknowledged that the retaliation would be within reason.

The conversation was initiated by Germany amid concerns—primarily voiced by the United States—that Iran’s attack would increase the breach of the war in the area. Since October 7, 2023, Israel has staunchly attacked enemies in the Gaza Strip and surrounding region in an effort to destroy the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas and eliminate its threats against the nation.

Hamas slaughtered more than a thousand innocents in Israeli towns last fall, sparking the war that has since killed and displaced thousands more in Gaza. The United States has remained an ally of Israel while fervently attempting to reach ceasefire and peace agreements to spare additional casualties.

On April 14, Iran launched a number of airstrikes towards Israel, including drones and ballistic missiles. According to United States officials, the strikes lasted about five hours, but all weapons launched at the Jewish nation have been shot down. There have been no reports of direct casualties, although a handful of people have been treated for minor to severe injuries and emotional distress.

Iran’s attack against Israel came after the Jewish nation launched an airstrike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus. The April 1 attack left seven dead, including three military commanding officers.

The call between Baerbock and Amir-Abdollahian included a warning from the United States that Israel and its allies would respond in turn to any attack launched from Iran. However, the Iranian official explained that his country’s response would be “legitimate self-defense” and an act of “punishing the aggressor,” which he said violated the Vienna Convention and international law with the airstrike.

The Biden administration has informed Israel that it will not participate in any offensive measures taken against Iran.
