(NewsWorthy.news) – A Democratic representative has expressed his “support” for welcoming migrants from the war-torn Gaza Strip to settle in the United States.
Rep. Jamaal Bowman of New York said in an interview with a local outlet last week that America has a history of being a “land of immigrants” and refugees seeking asylum, adding that he is “fully” in favor of this approach, including for Palestinians trapped amid the ongoing war in the Middle East.
When asked if America should “bring in” people from the Gaza Strip, Bowman said that the nation has “always” served as “an open home” to those who are fleeing violence, oppression, or persecution in their native lands. Additionally, the representative expressed his support for granting amnesty to immigrants who have been in America “for quite some time.”
Bowman’s comments come amid heightened tension in the United States about the ongoing armed conflict between Israel and Hamas. Immediately following the Palestinian terrorist group’s massacre of more than a thousand innocents in Israeli towns on October 7, 2023, American leaders and citizens were divided in response to the tragedy.
Israel’s counter offenses—which have killed more than 30,000 civilians in Gaza—have been seen by some as an extreme response bordering negligence. Even President Joe Biden, who has repeatedly expressed support for America’s long-time ally, has warned the Jewish nation to tread carefully so as not to expand the war in the region or cause reckless casualties.
Meanwhile, in the United States, students at universities across the country have staged encampments that have resulted in violence and hundreds of arrests, leading some institutions to cancel commencement ceremonies.
Bowman has been under fire in recent months for several questionable moves. In October, he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge related to him activating a false fire alarm—causing the Capitol to evacuate—while his party was seeking to delay a critical vote in the House. Last week, amid his ongoing criticism of Israel, Bowman was apparently tricked by a parody social media account that jokingly offered to help him with a fundraiser.
