(NewsWorthy.news) – Democratic California Representative Maxine Waters has claimed that former President Donald Trump was fuelling violence in the U.S., and has suggested his supporters should be investigated as potential “domestic terrorists” preparing for civil war. Waters expressed concern about Trump’s divisive narrative and his mention of “retribution”, “revenge” and “civil war.” She said she would press the criminal justice system to investigate the MAGA movement over the concerns. The congresswoman called Trump’s language “dangerous” and asked if Americans should be worried about their safety.
Waters referred to the former president’s controversial rhetoric in recent months, such as his warning that there would be a “bloodbath.” The comment was promptly criticized by Democrats, who argued it was threatening violence against political rivals. Defenders of Trump clarified that the comment was a threat relating to the over-reliance of the auto industry on Chinese exports, particularly regarding electric vehicles.
After his conviction of 34 felony counts in his hush-money criminal trial, Trump said he would accept potential jail time, but warned that this could push his supporters to “breaking point.” The former president has painted himself as a victim of political persecution throughout his re-election campaign. The Democrats have been quick to stress that Trump is now a “convicted felon” following the Manhattan court ruling.
Some Republicans, however, such as Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, have highlighted the hypocrisy of Democrats in condemning the “worship” of Trump as a convicted felon on one hand while continuing to idolize George Floyd on the other. Floyd, who died in police custody, had already served jail time for drug and burglary offenses, one of which involved pointing a gun at a pregnant woman’s belly. Waters, who is African-American, even encouraged pro-Floyd protesters to get “more confrontational” during the trial of former police officer Derek Chauvin over Floyd’s death if the trial appeared to work in the officer’s favor.
Waters also accused Trump of being “in love” with foreign dictators, such as Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un. Waters has previously claimed that Trump supporters are “training” to attack in the event that Biden wins the November election, and in 2021 was forced to deny that she was inciting violence against Republicans following a move to impeach Trump.
