(NewsWorthy.news) – Israel’s military has claimed to have eliminated multiple operatives hiding in a school in central Gaza linked to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency. The airstrike on the Abu Oraiban School in Nuseirat, which was housing thousands of displaced refugees, killed 23 people and injured another 73, according to Gaza’s civil defense agency. Israeli officials claimed that the assault on the school was carefully planned after evidence was found linking Hamas terrorists to the site, which they allegedly used as a hiding place.

The Israeli Defense Forces released a statement claiming that the terrorists were using the school building as an active operational base and hiding place. According to the IDF, Hamas used the hideout to plan and execute attacks against Israeli forces in the Gaza strip. The latest assaults by Israeli forces, which also included an airstrike close to a refugee encampment in Khan Younis, killed 40 people within 24 hours.

Israel’s assault was reportedly targeting Hamas’ leading military commander in Gaza, Mohammed Deif, whose fate remains unknown. The Qassam Brigades leader, credited as the mastermind behind the October 7 attacks, has kept a low public profile and has been hunted by Israel for decades. Deif has already been the target of multiple airstrikes, but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he could not be “absolutely certain” that the commander was killed in the latest bombardment.

Regarding the assault on the UNRWA school, the IDF stressed that it had taken steps to limit civilian casualties by using precise weaponry and relying on additional intelligence information. The IDF blamed Hamas for “systematically” contravening international law.

According to the IDF, Hamas has been occupying schools to exploit the civilian population of Gaza as human shields and plot against the nation of Israel. Members of the terrorist group’s Nukhba wing, which participated in the October 7 attacks, have been killed in previous airstrikes against schools in Gaza. The UNRWA has been criticized after it was reported that 12 members of its staff took part in the October 7 attacks.
