Trump Backs Former Navy SEAL Over Freedom Caucus Candidate

(NewsWorthy.news) – Former president and presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump has endorsed the opponent of a candidate in a state race after calling the Freedom Caucus representative a traitor to his presidential campaign.

This week, via a Truth Social post, the leader of the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement voiced his support for Sen. John McGuire, a Virginian who is challenging fellow Republican Rep. Bob Good for his seat in the United States House of Representatives.

Good, who currently leads the Congressional chamber’s right-wing Freedom Caucus, is facing the penalty dealt by Trump after he sided with another GOP presidential candidate. He is set to face off with McGuire, a former Navy SEAL, in the June 18 Republican primary. The competition for Virginia’s 5th District is heavily funded by numerous GOP groups and is one of the top races being monitored on a national level.

On May 28, Trump wrote that the 55-year-old McGuire has earned his “complete and total endorsement” for his campaign. According to the controversial president, Good had consistently launched attacks against him up until he provided his “loving” support. However, Trump stated that “it was too late” for Good to come back from the “damage” that had already “been done.”

Alongside his endorsement of McGuire, Trump maintains that Good is “bad for Virginia” and therefore “bad for the USA,” contradicting the lawmaker’s campaign slogan. The former president has accused Good for “turning his back” on the MAGA movement. McGuire, on the other hand, is seen as a “true American hero” by Trump, who praised his work in the drug war at home and abroad and referred to him as a politician who “always put[s] America first.”

The revenge from Trump comes just over a year after Good formally endorsed Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis as a GOP presidential candidate. It was only after DeSantis rescinded his presidential bid that Good decided to back Trump for the Republican nomination in the 2024 election.
