Tallest US Skyscraper May Soon Rise in Oklahoma

(NewsWorthy.news) – Plans for a skyscraper in Oklahoma have been approved with no height restrictions, paving the way for it to become the tallest building in America.

The project, which is being completed by Matteson Capital developers in Oklahoma City, is set to stand at 1,907 feet. The zoning application for Legends Tower was approved by the Oklahoma City Council last week. Initially, the project proposed a height of 1,750 feet. This would have landed it as the second tallest building in the United States, following the One World Trade building in Manhattan at 1,776 feet.

However, the recently updated zoning application removed height restrictions that were originally in the construction plans. Two months ago, the plan with its original height was approved. Legends Tower now has the green light to move forward with construction. The landmark project will include a variety of features, such as two apartment buildings, housing for low-income residents, and parking garages.

Additionally, the tower will boast a Hyatt Dream Hotel that has 480 rooms and a condo complex with 85 living spaces, built 22 stories above retail and parking locations. The last obstacle standing in the way of the massive development relates to digital signs, which will need the approval of the city council.

According to an urban planning director with a development consulting company, Mark Zitzow, the signing package to be submitted to the city is likely to be “the most detailed” one that Oklahoma City “has ever seen.” The proposal will include plans for digital signs to be set up across all four towers in the building complex, sparking the greatest controversy of the major development.

Zitzow explained that no billboards or “accessory signs” are allowed, leading to the necessity to submit detailed information on what the complex’s digital signs will look like. The cost of the construction, set to be completed in two phases, will be $1.2 billion.

The project is expected to break ground in the fall. The height of Legends Tower—chosen specifically in honor of when Oklahoma became a state in 1907—will make the One World Trade Center the second tallest building in the United States.
