Dershowitz’s Departure from the Democratic Party

Alan Dershowitz, a preeminent attorney and constitutional expert, has officially severed his longstanding ties with the Democratic Party. During an interview on Newsmax, Dershowitz expressed profound disappointment with the party’s current direction, specifically their stance on Israel and antisemitism. This announcement marks the end of his decades-long association with the Democratic Party, a decision that underscores significant ideological shifts within the party.

In the Talkline With Zev Brenner podcast, Dershowitz did not hold back. He lambasted the recent Democratic National Convention (DNC), calling it the “most anti-Jewish, anti-Israel, anti-Zionist convention” he had ever witnessed. Dershowitz had supported the Democratic Party for many years, but recent events and key figures’ comments have led him to reconsider his political affiliations.

Internal Conflicts and Criticism Over Israel-Hamas War

Dershowitz’s departure comes amid the Democratic Party’s internal conflict sparked by the Israel-Hamas war. The conflict began on October 7 with a brutal attack by Hamas on southern Israel. Following this, Israel’s military response led to over 40,000 deaths in Gaza, as reported by the Hamas-controlled Health Ministry. These events have sparked considerable discord within the Democratic Party about how to address the situation.

“I am no longer a Democrat. I am an independent,” said Alan Dershowitz.

Progressive campaigners within the party have assailed the Biden administration for not taking a firmer stance against Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s actions. Dershowitz, however, finds himself unable to align with these perspectives, citing increasing antisemitism within progressive movements. Prominent Jewish leaders share these sentiments, expressing alarm at the rising bias against Jewish communities.

Disappointment with Democratic Leadership and Future Political Stance

Furthermore, Dershowitz criticized Vice President Kamala Harris for not attending Netanyahu’s address to Congress. He also voiced his disgust with the prominent Democratic figures such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Elizabeth Warren, and Bernie Sanders. Dershowitz stated he could not remain associated with a party that legitimizes anti-Israel arguments by featuring such speakers at their convention.

“I was disgusted at the Democratic National Convention. Absolutely disgusted,” Dershowitz stated.

Despite his departure, Dershowitz remains uncertain about which candidate to support in the upcoming November elections. His decision will hinge on how each candidate handles issues related to Iran and their support for Israel. He remains hopeful that the Democratic Party might eventually revert to its foundational principles, though he acknowledges the likelihood of many liberals leaving the party due to its current trajectory.
