R&B Songstress Angela Bofill Dies at 70

(NewsWorthy.news) – Angela Bofill, a popular R&B singer, died last week at her daughter’s home in Vallejo, California. She was 70 years old.

The news of the musician’s death was shared through her Facebook page on Friday June 14. Rich Engel, her manager, described the late singer as his “dear friend Angie.” He wrote he is “saddened to announce” she passed away on June 13. In a follow up post, Engel added that the message was shared “on behalf of” the singer’s daughter, Shauna, and son-in-law, Chris Portuguese.

The second post was to confirm the reports of Bofill’s death, saying that it “is indeed true.” At the end of her life, Bofill lived with her daughter and son-in-law, as well as their four kids, at their home in California. Although a cause of death was not revealed, the singer had previously suffered multiple strokes—one in 2006 and another in 2007—which resulted in the left side of her body being paralyzed.

Bofill was born in New York City and started her career as a teenager, releasing her first album—Angie—in 1978. Her recording stint lasted into the 1990s. In 2023, she was added to the Women Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Five of Bofill’s studio albums landed in the top half of the Billboard 200 chart. Two of them were with GRP Records and the other three with Arista. In 1983, her single “Too Tough” from the Arista label landed in the top five hits of the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, which was formerly called Black Singles. Bofill’s other biggest hits were “Tonight I Give In,” “This Time I’ll Be Sweeter,” and a cover of the 1978 Gino Vannelli hit, “I Just Wanna Stop.”

Following the news, Bofill’s fellow musicians took to social media to share their condolences and grief. Melba Moore, a singer and actress, shared a photo of her and Bofill, taken years ago, on Instagram. The caption was directed towards “dear sweet Angela Bofill,” who was a personal friend of Moore’s as well as a colleague.

Drummer Sheila E. also mourned the news, expressing prayers for Bofill’s family and saying the “amazing, beautiful soul” of the late singer will “truly be missed.”
