Mother Facing Charges After Infant Son Dies From Fentanyl

(NewsWorthy.news) – A mother in Nevada has been arrested a year after her young son died from ingesting fentanyl.

31-year-old Kiera McCall of Las Vegas, Nevada was arrested on Wednesday June 26 and now faces a charge of second-degree murder. Mathias McCall was only a year old when he ingested the poisonous substance in June 2023.

Police reports explain that McCall and her child were both taken to the hospital last year, following the discovery of the baby not breathing. McCall reportedly tried to wake him with a cold shower. Later, she contacted neighbors, who tried to revive the baby before first responders arrived.

Mathias was pronounced dead on June 9, three days after he was taken to the hospital. According to witnesses and neighbors, McCall appeared to be high on drugs when the incident occurred. They told police that she said she uses heroin, when asked by neighbors what substances she used.

Later, speaking to law enforcement, McCall adjusted her comments to accuse her roommate of being the one who used drugs in their shared apartment. The mother said that the roommate used edibles and marijuana, although she had not stored any at the apartment in at least a month. The roommate later told police that she did not use heroin.

Additionally, neighbors reported that the mother suggested her baby may have “gotten into some heroin” that was found under the bed. McCall also said that she had found small portions of heroin before and swept them from the apartment while cleaning.

Police later uncovered drug products and narcotics in the residence. Specifically, they found residue on foil, kept in a drawer, a smoking pipe made of glass, and a needle and syringe. White liquid found in the baby’s sippy cup was tested for controlled substances but came back negative.

According to an autopsy report, Mathias’ death was caused by the “toxic effects of fentanyl.” The manner of death is currently viewed as accidental. McCall did not appear at her original court date on July 2, for medical reasons. She is being held without bail and is due in court on July 9.
