(NewsWorthy.news) – A seemingly minor traffic stop took an eerie turn over the weekend when a driver pulled over for failing to turn on his headlights was found with a famous horror film mask and an illegal weapon in his backseat.
Just before 10pm on Saturday June 30, officers with the Santa Rosa Police Department pulled over a California driver whose vehicle headlights were not on. The 27-year-old man was wearing a mask reminiscent of that worn by Jason Voorhees, the famous serial killer in the “Friday the 13th” horror film franchise.
In addition to the creepy mask he was wearing while driving without his headlights on, police uncovered an AR-15 rifle in the backseat of his Toyota Camry. Adonay Efriem was not legally authorized to possess the gun. Officers described the driver as “sweating profusely” and noted that he “appeared to be nervous.”
The rifle was partly covered in the back of the car with a blanket, according to authorities. It was a semi-automatic Eagle Arms Eagle-15 firearm. The gun was not loaded but was also “an unregistered assault weapon” for which Efriem did not have legal authority to own.
Police arrested the driver without incident and took him to be booked in Sonoma County jail. He was detained on suspicion of possessing an assault weapon. The incident occurred amid a growing number of illegal firearm possession cases as well as increased gun violence within Santa Rosa.
The Special Enforcement Team was established within the city’s police department in an effort to dismantle the growing issue of gun possession and violence. As reiterated in a statement following the “Jason” masked driver encounter, the law enforcement agency “is committed” to ensure safety for the community.
The night before that incident, a pat search of a local man uncovered a range of illegal, concealed weapons. Further search from police found a “ghost gun” filled with ammunition, a revolver, and substance believed to be methamphetamine.
