(NewsWorthy.news) – A 10-year-old girl was investigated over threats she made to one of her classmates that she would bring a pistol to school with her and “use it,” according to police.
The alleged threat resulted in a raid on the girl’s home by law enforcement, who confiscated two guns and launched multiple investigations into the incident. Speaking to another student via Facetime, the girl reportedly declared she would bring a gun with her to use in fights at their charter school in Hayward, California.
The incident took place at the end of May. Police then launched two separate probes into the matter, one aimed at determining how serious the threat was and the other to find out how she had access to the pistol. On the same day the threat came to the attention of authorities, they raided the suspected girl’s house and rounded up two guns, two loaded magazines, and several ammunition rounds.
Police launched their probe on May 29, following information from a Key Academy administrator that pointed to the potential shooting. The disagreement between the two students was reportedly over the fact that they had a crush on the same person, leading to one threatening to fight the other with a gun.
According to authorities, the threat was first voiced via a digital chat with several students as witnesses. It was then reportedly made again during a video call on May 28, when the suspect showed the pistol and said she would “use it” if she needed to. In speaking to the girl’s mother, police discovered that two guns were kept in their home within the 10-year-old’s access.
One of her parents worked a security job and legally owned the firearms. Officers said that the mother promised to purchase a gun safe, but it had not been bought and the girl was still at home alone with the gun accessible hours after. Following the lack of security measures taken, authorities initiated the raid and confiscated the guns.
Due to her age and state privacy laws, it is unknown to the public whether the girl was charged or taken into custody. Her mother has not been criminally charged.
But this is not the first time the Hayward community has faced such situations. The 10-year-old’s scare comes just under a year after a shooting at a large 4th of July gathering injured six.
