Former U.S. Airman Joins Russian Forces

Wilmer Puello-Mota, a former U.S. Air Force veteran and Air National Guardsman, has defected to Russia and is now serving as a drone operator in the Russian military. Puello-Mota, who achieved the rank of technical sergeant during his 10-year service, fled the United States earlier this year while facing child pornography charges.

In a video released by the Russian Defense Ministry, Puello-Mota introduces himself as “Will” from Massachusetts, using the call sign “Boston.” He is now part of the 137th Brigade in Russia, where he operates reconnaissance drones.

Denial of Treason

Despite the gravity of his actions, Puello-Mota vehemently denies betraying the United States. In the video, he states, “I don’t consider myself a traitor.” He argues that his decision to join the Russian Armed Forces stems from his disillusionment with U.S. policies and his study of international politics.

“The United States have done things that are very provocative,” Puello-Mota said. “It’s been involved in other people’s politics, other nation’s interests. It should not be doing that.”

Military Background and Legal Troubles

Puello-Mota’s military career included a deployment to Afghanistan and two Air Force Achievement medals. He specialized in air base defense and security forces. However, his service came to an abrupt end in October 2022 when he was separated from the Air National Guard due to criminal charges.

Criminal activity is not compatible with our values as an organization and will not be tolerated in our ranks.”

The legal case against Puello-Mota had been ongoing since 2020. He and his lawyer had reportedly reached a plea deal for an 18-month prison sentence before he fled the country. The Rhode Island Attorney General has noted that Puello-Mota’s current whereabouts are beyond the court’s jurisdiction.

Implications and Reactions

This case of defection raises serious concerns about national security and the potential transfer of sensitive information to a foreign power. The Pentagon has confirmed Puello-Mota’s service history but has not commented further on the situation.

Russian media claims that Puello-Mota has signed a contract with the Russian Defense Ministry and has participated in military operations in Ukraine. His Russian commander has reportedly praised him for his professionalism and passion.

As this situation continues to unfold, it serves as a stark reminder of the complex geopolitical landscape and the personal decisions that can have far-reaching consequences for national security and international relations.
