Haitian Migrant Sought On Suspicion of Rape In US

(NewsWorthy.news) – A Haitian migrant released on a $500 bail on June 26 is being sought by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement after allegedly raping a disabled teenage girl in March. Judge Susan Sullivan of Massachusetts opted to release 26-year-old Cory Alvarez on the low bond despite the seriousness of the charge. Prosecutors called for a $10,000 bond, but Sullivan dismissed their arguments that the suspect was a threat to the public and should remain in custody.

Law enforcement arrested Alvarez in connection with the rape of the 15-year-old girl. She had visited a Comfort Inn for help with loading an app on her tablet. She was then raped at the inn, which had been allocated for migrant housing. After Alvarez was charged ICE placed a detainer on the suspect.

On June 28, the Republican-controlled House Judiciary Committee hit Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas with a subpoena, which insisted he produce documents on nine migrants facing accusations of appalling crimes, including Alvarez. The DHS must submit the long-awaited records by July 17.

ICE filed the detainer against the suspect with the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office. Alvarez was required to wear an ankle monitor when released on bail. ICE officials are unable to track the suspect, however, due to Boston being a sanctuary city. Because of the sanctuary city status, local authorities are unable to cooperate with federal immigration authorities.

In February even the Democratic New York City Mayor Eric Adams argued that the sanctuary city laws must be changed to allow the ICE to work with local authorities. Adams stressed that it should be easier for the ICE to deport migrants accused of serious and violent offenses. Mayorkas, along with President Joe Biden, has been slated by Republicans over the Democrats’ handling of the border crisis and the president’s catch and release program.

Under his bail conditions, Alvarez was required to hand in his passport, check in twice a month with probation and stay in house confinement. His court date is scheduled for August 13.
