(NewsWorthy.news.com) – As the immigration crisis at America’s southern border continues to spark controversy throughout the country, a group of thousands of migrants are preparing to illegally cross the border before the presidential election in November.
The group of about 3,000 is making its way to the border on foot, hoping to illegally enter the United States before President Joe Biden leaves office—presumably taking his notorious open-border policies with him.
Though Biden has dropped out of his re-election efforts amid pressure from both political parties, the leading candidate in the race—Republican Donald Trump—remains determined to shut down the border if he wins another term in the White House. Reports indicate that the group of thousands includes natives from numerous countries in Latin America, who are traveling through Mexico to enter America via the southern border.
Once there, the group is hoping to submit claims for asylum, with the plan to be allowed into the country. Under the Biden administration’s policies, asylum seekers can be let into the country freely pending their hearing dates. This rule has led to much backlash from critics who argue that the lack of screening has resulted in increased crime throughout the country.
Among the controversial policies is the CBP One application, launched by the federal Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency. This initiative seeks to get more illegals into the country at a faster pace by allowing them to make appointments to submit asylum claims at designated entry ports.
Trump, joined by his running mate Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio, has voiced his commitment to reverse the notorious open-border policies of the current administration, with the former president accusing Biden of doing “everything possible to destroy” America.
On the other side of the border, however, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador of Mexico has indicated his plans to write to Trump and assure him that migrants coming from his country “don’t carry drugs” into America. Obrador—who also described the former president as “a friend” and a person with both “intelligence and vision”—added that his plans to close the southern border “won’t solve anything” and “can’t be done.”
