Russia Blasts US Over Ukraine’s Missile Strike on Occupied Land

(NewsWorthy.news) – Six people were killed and another 100 have been wounded in Ukrainian missile and drone strikes on Russia-annexed Crimea on June 23, according to Russian authorities. The Kremlin-installed governor of the region’s coastal city of Sevastopol, Mikhail Razvozhayev, stated that three adults and two children among the victims were hit by falling debris from intercepted missiles and drones.

The Russian Defense Ministry blamed both the US and Ukraine for the deliberate assault on a civilian population, which used ATACMS supplied by the US. According to Russian media outlets, 124 were wounded in the city and a forest fire was started by falling rocket fragments. A residential building was also set on fire as a fifth missile exploded above Sevastopol.

The attack prompted an angry response from Moscow, and came after western powers relaxed their stances on how Kyiv should be using weapons supplied by its Western allies. Ukraine has previously focused mainly on strategic targets within Russian territory, particularly Russia’s oil infrastructure.

Allies such as the UK and Germany declared that Ukraine had a right to defend itself and could use their weapons as it pleased. Having previously expressed disapproval over Ukrainian strikes on Russian soil, the White House recently shifted its stance. As President Joe Biden announced in late May that Kyiv could use missiles supplied by the US on Russian targets, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said the US was “adapting” to the war’s development.

After the attack on Sevastopol, the Kremlin warned that there would be “consequences” for the US. It accused the White House of “killing Russian children” and called the attack “barbaric”. On June 25, a Russian strike on Ukraine’s eastern town of Pokrovsk using Iskander-M missiles killed five people, including four children. Dozens were injured in the attack. On June 22, four Russian aerial bombs hit a five-story building in Kharkiv, killing three people and injuring 41 others. The next day, a guided missile struck Kharkiv killing at least one person and injuring 11.

In more encouraging news for Kyiv’s regime, Ukraine’s Navy published photos on Sunday that reportedly confirm that Ukrainian forces destroyed a warehouse in the Krasnodar region of southern Russia, which was used to house and launch Shahed drones designed in Iran.
