(Newsworthy.news) – A retired leader in Israel’s intelligence forces recently died at the age of 98.
Zvi Zamir, who served in the Israeli Defense Forces as well as the head of the national intelligence agency Mossad from 1968 to 1974, was announced dead by the office of the Prime Minister. The cause of his death has yet to be revealed.
Zamir is largely remembered for his warnings ahead of the armed conflict between Israel and a coalition of Arab countries, which were mostly ignored by the Israeli government. From October 6 to October 25, 1973, Israel engaged in combat with Arab nations. Egypt and Syria had led an attack on Israel on Yom Kippur in an effort to regain territory that had been lost in 1967 during the third Arab-Israeli war.
Prior to the attack, Zamir learned from a top informant that the two Arab states were planning a surprise attack. As head of Mossad at the time, he reported this to the government, who did not take the tip seriously and failed to adequately prepare for the offensive attack.
It was only a few hours in the aftermath of the tip that the Egyptian and Syrian military forces launched their attack, successfully overrunning the Israeli border. In the end, Israel’s defense forces pushed the armies back with a counterattack. The brief war is eerily reminiscent of the current conflict taking place in the Middle East.
Decades after the attack from Syria and Egypt, Israel is reeling from the surprise attack from the terrorist group Hamas in October 2023. The nation remains in an armed conflict with Palestine.
Zamir’s military and intelligence service also led to his management of the assassination of leaders in Palestine who were accused of having been responsible for the tragic massacre of Israeli athletes competing in the Munich Olympic Games in 1972.
Following Zamir’s death, the Israeli Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, posted on X that the late military leader would “be remembered” for his “contribution to Israel’s security.”
