(NewsWorthy.news) – The Biden administration said on May 17 that it strongly disagreed with the French government’s decision to invite a representative of the Russian regime to be part of an event that will commemorate the 80th anniversary of the D-Day invasion. A White House official said that while Washington objects to the decision of France’s President Emmanuel Macron, they understand he’s the one to make the call as the event will take place at Normandy.
The official also said that the silver lining of having a Kremlin representative at the event would be that Russians could remember that they once fought “real Nazis” instead of the “imaginary ones” they claim they are fighting in Ukraine. The official was referring to the Kremlin’s claim of the existence of many Nazi groups in the neighboring nation and the way Russian President Vladimir Putin used it as one of his main excuses for invading Ukraine in February 2022. Independent investigations revealed that while there are indeed some members of the Ukrainian military that consider themselves Nazis or white supremacists, there are also many members of the Russian Armed Forces that hold the same views.
On social media, some journalists have said that what the White House fears the most with Macron’s invitation of a Kremlin representative is the possibility that the person crosses paths with U.S. President Joe Biden at the event. While there has been speculation about which Kremlin official will be part of the event, most political analysts agreed that it won’t be Putin or any important minister.
Macron’s decision came a couple of months after he said that NATO should prepare for a war against Russia, as he claimed it was almost inevitable for the Kremlin to expand its imperialist ambitions and attack a NATO country. The French president even said he wouldn’t rule out the possibility of sending NATO soldiers to Ukraine, which sparked criticism among some European leaders who claimed he was escalating tensions with Moscow.
