(NewsWorthy.news) – The White House has refused to say whether President Joe Biden will debate former president Donald Trump. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre dismissed questions from Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy on whether Biden was scheduled to attend any presidential debates this year that include Trump. Jean-Pierre repeatedly told the correspondent to speak to the campaign. Trump posted on his Truth Social platform on March 6 to state that he was up for a debate “anytime, anywhere” and that it was for the good of the country to debate its key issues.
Biden has not only been called out by Trump for the lack of debate between presidential candidates; leading independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr has argued that the 81-year-old incumbent president cannot hold unscripted debates. Kennedy described both Biden and Trump as “weak” candidates despite the Democratic National Committee accusing the independent candidate of “colluding” with Trump’s campaign and donors.
In September 2023 Kennedy urged Biden to engage in debates to prove to the public that the White House isn’t run by “unelected people”. Biden suggested that Trump had “nothing else to do” other than debate him and that were he in the same position he would want a debate too. Both Biden and Trump have accused each other of being “senile” and unfit to be president. The former president has himself skipped Republican primary debates and noted the “commanding” lead he had in polls. Trump has said he is committed to debating Biden as many times as necessary.
Campaign communications director for Biden’s campaign, Michael Tyler, said that the discussion about a debate would occur at an “appropriate time” in the cycle. The campaign advised Trump to watch Biden’s State of the Union address to Congress. Trump responded that he would watch and promptly correct the president’s speech. The former president has accused the Debate Commission, which is officially non-partisan, of politician bias and suggested that it is a “subsidiary” of the Democratic Party.
