(NewsWorthy.news) – A rich Democratic representative has become the bud of jokes after he invested a massive amount of money into a Senate primary race that he lost by a considerable margin.
Rep. David Trone of Maryland has been roundly mocked after his notable loss to rival Angela Alsobrooks in the Democratic Senate primary. The congressman, who co-founded Total Wine and More, reportedly invested $60 million into his failed campaign. He lost on Tuesday May 14, coming short by a double-digit margin, despite having been up in the polls earlier in the competition.
Following the news, the Democrat’s critics took to social media and described him as “pathetic” and a “loser.” One journalist, Kirk Bado, commented on X that Trone had invested “approximately 5,922,000 bottles worth” of Josh, a wine brand, before he lost in what the podcast host described as a “not-particularly close” race.
Greg Price of the State Freedom Caucus Network also reacted to the news, noting that the amount of money spent on the failed campaign could have given all of Maryland’s 6.1 million residents $9.83 instead.
Trone first launched his bid for Senate in May 2023, after having served in the House since 2018. Ever since the beginning of his recent campaign, the Democrat has prided himself on not being involved with or accepting money from political action committees. Last year, he stuck with his determination to “raise individual dollars” and investing his own finances into his political ventures.
Up to the end of the race this week, Trone presented himself as the ideal candidate to face Larry Hogan, the Old Line State’s former Republican governor. The GOP politician—who was well-liked by voters who identified with both Democrat and Republican leaders—finished his term as governor this year and launched a bid for Senate.
As Maryland residents cast their votes earlier this week, Trone said that his team was willing to “spend whatever it takes” to conquer Hogan, citing the need to maintain the Senate’s Democratic majority. On Tuesday, Hogan won the Republican primary and will now compete against Alsobrooks.
