(Newsworthy.news) – In the Mexican town of Tulum, a well-known beach resort, an American woman was killed in what seems to have been a botched drug transaction.
Tulum is situated on the Caribbean Sea shore, South of Cancun and hours north of the border with Belize.
According to news outlets, an inquiry was launched by the Quintana Roo Attorney General’s Office into the event that occurred on February 9th. The incident resulted in the deaths of a 44-year-old woman from Los Angeles, Niko Honarbakhsh, and a suspected drug dealer from Belize.
The man’s possession of cocaine, bags with brightly colored pills, and brown powder, prompted the prosecutor’s office to suspect that he was a gang member and drug dealer at the time of his murder.
In a statement, the prosecutor’s office denied the validity of local stories that attempted to link the two victims.
A stray gunshot, according to the prosecution, is what killed Honarbakhsh. The probe will include autopsies on both persons.
The prosecution has begun following leads in its pursuit of the individuals they have designated as suspects. No one has been charged yet.
Tulum has seen the deaths of other visitors in previous years due to gun violence involving gangs. In 2021, a California tourist blogger, as well as a German citizen, were among two visitors who lost their lives in a restaurant shootout that broke out between competing drug traffickers.
Last year, the United States issued a “Do Not Travel” warning for some areas of Mexico in March, just before the busy spring break vacation season. It cited gang violence and the fact that American nationals had fallen critically ill or were killed in Mexico following the use of adulterated prescription pills or synthetic drugs. Two Americans and a defenseless Mexican bystander were killed in a gunfight after four Americans were abducted by cartel gunmen as they crossed the border in search of cosmetic surgery.
