(Newsworthy.news) – Former president Donald Trump has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, marking his fourth nomination in recent years.
The top GOP candidate for the 2024 presidential election was nominated by Rep. Claudia Tenney of New York—a fellow Republican—who made the motion in response to Trump’s involvement in the enactment of the Abraham Accords while in the White House.
The series of agreements are between Israel and neighboring countries in the Middle East and North Africa and strive to promote peace regardless of religious beliefs or cultural and ethnic backgrounds. As Tenney put it, the former president was “instrumental” for the treaty signing in 2020. At the time, Israel, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates signed the agreement, followed soon after by Morocco and Sudan.
In a January 30 statement from her press office, Rep. Tenney explained that Trump “proved to be false” the assumption by many nations that no such peace agreement could be reached “without a resolution” to the ongoing tensions between Israel and Palestine.
The GOP congresswoman also pointed out that two previous and similar agreements in 1976 and 1994 had been acknowledged through Nobel Peace Prizes. However, the most recent action including Trump’s leadership had yet to be recognized.
The nomination comes as the war between Israel and Hamas rages on in the Gaza Strip, threatening to expand and paving way for criticism of actions like the Abraham Accords, which have not shown significant progress towards peace between Israel and Palestine.
In addition to Tenney’s recent nomination, Trump has been nominated three times in recent history. Norwegian parliament member Christian Tybring-Gjedde nominated him at the time of the Abraham Accords signing, citing his “groundbreaking cooperation” in the agreement.
Finnish European Parliament member Laura Huhtasaari later nominated Trump for his efforts to maintain peace amid an “era of endless wars.” Also in 2020, the former president was nominated for promoting peace in the war-torn Middle East by a group of lawmakers from Australia.
