(Newsworthy.news) – In the classified documents litigation in Florida, the legal team representing Donald Trump has fought with media groups demanding information disclosure.
The government has repeatedly attempted to recover the confidential materials that Trump allegedly unlawfully kept at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida after he left the White House in 2021. The former president now faces dozens of criminal counts regarding the top secret files. He has pleaded not guilty and denied any misconduct. He also faces three other criminal prosecutions during his bid to regain the presidency in November.
On Wednesday, Trump’s attorney, Christopher Kise, filed a new document in which he complained to Judge Aileen Cannon about the Press Coalition’s (a group of prominent media organizations) lack of communication with him before they requested the release of case materials.
Because the issue was briefed and pending, Kise stated that the Counsel for the Press Coalition argued that the timing of the communications was appropriate and per the local rules. Kise contends this is incorrect because Trump’s staff did not protest the records’ publication; instead, they demanded prior consultation and claimed that Prosecutor Jack Smith, not Cannon, should be held accountable for their disclosure.
Since Trump is simultaneously a presidential candidate and a defendant in the E. Jean Carroll defamation suit in New York, Kise thinks he needs further time to consider whether to release the records.
Kise suggests that he should not rush into deciding whether to object, consent, or take no position regarding the Press Coalition’s motion or any other application.
Additionally, he voiced his displeasure with the Press Coalition, claiming they were required by court order to confer with the prosecution and defense teams before proceeding with the case.
Except for a Friday afternoon email imposing the arbitrary Monday morning deadline, Kise believes that the Press Coalition’s legal team did not make any reasonable or good faith attempts.
Additionally, the certification provided by counsel did not adequately specify its activities, suggesting an attempt to hide its non-compliance.
