(Newsworthy.news) – Following open heart surgery, famous chef Rick Stein has shared that he may not have “much longer” to live.
The 77-year-old celebrity chef underwent open heart surgery in June 2022, after doctors discovered a problem with his aortic valve, which needed replacement. He was first alerted to the issue when he developed breathing trouble during an outdoor excursion.
Although Stein has since fully recovered from the operation, he is bluntly reflecting upon the potential reality that his life may come to an end in the near future. During a recent interview with the British news outlet The Times, Stein said that the successful operation and recovery has “left me tremendously optimistic.”
However, he also noted that his age and “normal realities of life” also lead him to reflect that he won’t “last that much longer.” Stein shared that he first had this thought on the potentially short remainder of his life when he realized that there was a possibility of him not surviving the surgery.
The chef described having been “stopped in his tracks” prior to the procedure, offering an opportunity for him to “review his life.” He added that his wife, Sarah, has provided much-needed support and optimism amid his health challenges.
Stein is a well-known chef who also owns 10 seafood restaurants across the United Kingdom. Though his business ventures have been wildly successful, he has lost millions of dollars in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the business owner, the financial losses are largely due to the ongoing impact of the global pandemic, including rising costs of energy and fish. Stein has also disclosed that his restaurants were nearly shut down in 2021, which he described as a “very scary” close call with losing “the whole business.”
The 2021 profits for The Seafood Restaurant, the Padstow-based overarching business which includes restaurants and hotels as well as a culinary school, amounted to just under 350,000 British pounds. In 2022, the company earned 3.8 million.
