(NewsWorthy.news) – Film director, screenwriter and producer Oliver Stone has claimed that “lawfare” is being used against former President Donald Trump in the multiple court cases he faces in the year of the U.S. presidential election.
The controversial director mentioned Trump when discussing his new documentary Lula, which focuses on Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Lula was jailed in 2018 following an investigation into corruption, and Stone drew parallels between him and Trump. The director noted how “wild” allegations are against both Trump and the Biden family approaching the November vote.
President Joe Biden’s son Hunter faces charges relating to tax evasion and allegations that he illegally purchased a firearm while addicted to drugs. In May 2024 Hunter’s attempt to get the gun case thrown out was rejected. Following claims that Special Counsel Jack Smith tampered with evidence, the date for Trump’s classified documents trial in Florida was indefinitely postponed.
With Trump accusing the Biden administration of “weaponizing” the Department of Justice for campaigning purposes to attempt to discredit or even jail him, the incumbent president’s son is now looking to end up in court long before the classified documents case against Trump can go to trial.
Stone downplayed charges against Trump relating to the classified documents, attempts to overturn the 2020 election in Georgia and an alleged hush-money payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels, calling them “minor”. Stone argued that regardless of anyone’s views on Trump, corruption is a “way of life” as old as ancient civilizations such as Greece, Rome and Babylon. The director dismissed the notion that the U.S. is squeaky clean or free from corruption in comparison.
Stone, who directed Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July and JFK, has been accused of promoting conspiracy theories and supporting dictators. The filmmaker’s views have gained him such a controversial reputation that he has over the years increasingly struggled to secure financial backing for his films, turning to Europe for funding instead. In 2023 Stone said Americans made the wrong decision to vote for Biden, suggesting that the incumbent president lacks control over his administration.
