New Rule Mandates More Firearm Dealers to Run Background Checks

(NewsWorthy.news) – A new regulation from the federal government will require gun dealers in all 50 states to conduct more background checks on buyers at certain venues.

The updated rules from the Biden administration was brought about to address a loophole that previously permitted tens of thousands of firearms to be distributed by unlicensed dealers that failed to conduct background checks to make sure buyers were legally allowed to purchase a gun. It was finalized this week.

According to details shared by Attorney General Merrick Garland, the rule clarifies expectations for those who sell guns to make money to obtain a federal license and conduct background checks. This rule applies to sellers who do business online, at a brick-and-mortar store, and at gun shows.

The move comes as the latest effort from President Joe Biden and his administration to limit opportunities for gun violence, which has been a key issue he has focused on while in the White House and as he runs for reelection. During his term, he has launched the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, which is run by Vice President Kamala Harris. The commander-in-chief has also suggested banning assault weapons to Congress.

The rule is expected to face legal challenges by Second Amendment advocates who view the act as one that targets firearm owners. According to a statement, the National Rifle Association has said it is “already working” to see how it can “stop this unlawful rule.” Similarly, the National Shooting Sports Foundation is reportedly considering how to contend the rule, citing a belief that the regulation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is acting beyond its legal right.

Biden, though, commended the finalized update on the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, saying it “will save lives” and calling on Congress to “finish the job” and approve the legislation “now.” Harris added in a statement that the rule will help to prevent the “thousands of unlicensed gun dealers” from selling firearms without background checks to ensure guns do not end up in the wrong hands.
