More Than 300 Arrested in Pro-Palestine Protests

(Newsworthy.news) – Following massive New York protests in favor of Palestine, hundreds of demonstrators were arrested.

On January 8, the New York Police Department (NYPD) made 325 arrests of pro-Palestinian demonstrations who were stopping up three different bridges near New York City in addition to the Holland Tunnel.

The department’s patrol chief, John Chell, explained that the protestors disrupted the routes before 10 a.m., with the arrests being made within the following two hours. The arrests were made by both the NYPD as well as the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. During the protest, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Williamsburg Bridge, the Manhattan Bridge and the Holland Tunnel were blocked.

Demonstrators carried signs reading, “end the occupation” and “lift the siege on Gaza.” Even during the protest, there were city officials present to direct traffic of non-demonstrators trying to pass through the bridges and tunnel.

The New York protest was the latest in demonstrations initiated across the world in response to the ongoing armed conflict in the Middle East. Tension and protests have persisted since October 7, when the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas launched a surprise attack against Israeli towns, killing more than a thousand innocents.

Thousands more civilians have been killed in the Gaza Strip as Israeli Defense Forces issue air strikes intended to eliminate Hamas. This offensive has left more than 20,000 Palestinians dead, per the Gaza Health Ministry.

Also on January 8, another group of pro-Palestine protestors caused a disruption in South Carolina, where President Joe Biden was delivering a speech at Mother Emanuel Church. The commander-in-chief expressed sympathy for the “passion” of the protestors, noting that he has “been quietly working” alongside Israel’s government to “significantly” cut back on the violence in Gaza and spare innocent civilians.

The United States government has a longstanding history of supporting Israel. During the present conflict, it has shared efforts to mitigate violence and reduce the high number of casualties.
