(Newsworthy.news) – A parental rights group clashed with left-wing protestors during a recent town hall gathering, leading members of the conservative group to criticize its opponents.
Moms for Liberty, a nonprofit organization that launched in 2021 in response to extreme COVID-19 restrictions in schools and expanding to resist radical left-wing agendas being promoted to students, was faced with backlash for a New York City event on January 18.
On that day, the group of protestors neared a hundred people who came together outside the town hall location in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, which was hosted at the Bohemian Benevolent and Literary Association. The event was reportedly promoted by New York elected officials and representatives from a teacher’s union.
Tina Descovich, a co-founder of Moms for Liberty, criticized the large number of protestors on social media following the sold-out town hall gathering. In a January 19 post on X, the social media platform formerly called Twitter, Descovich said that the protestors “chose” to remain outside in 25-degree weather, opting to “chant at the building” rather than join the group indoors “for a discussion.” She emphasized that the event “was open to the public.”
Similarly, fellow co-founder Tiffany Justice told Newsweek in a statement that she had proposed a challenge to American Federation of Teachers president Randi Weingarten, inviting her to a debate about what she described as “real challenges facing public education.”
Weingarten, however, “refused to debate,” according to Justice. The labor union president instead decided to head up “organized rallies” in opposition to the Moms for Liberty town hall. She further explained that the motivation behind the meeting was to “hear from NYC parents” about ongoing issues in public schools.
Justice lamented that the “education cartel” views public schooling as “a political game” and pointed out that this mindset is what has led “more and more” parents to “stand up” in defense of “their parental rights.”
