(Newsworthy.news) – During a recent air strike issued by Israel’s military, a top Hezbollah commander was killed.
On Monday January 8, the Israeli military launched a deadly strike in southern Lebanon, costing the life of Wissam Hassan Tawil—a leader in the Hezbollah Radwan force—as well as another Hezbollah fighter. Both were killed while in a Honda SUV, which was the target of a strike launched in Majdal Selm.
Since the beginning of the ongoing war in the Middle East, Tawil has been the highest-ranking member of Hezbollah, which is the Lebanese Shia Islamist political and military group. The armed conflict between Israel and Hamas began on October 7, when the terrorist group issued a surprise attack on Israeli towns, massacring more than a thousand innocents and kidnapping hundreds more.
In the weeks that followed, thousands more civilians have been killed in counter offensive air strikes launched by Israeli defense forces into the Gaza Strip. The ongoing tension has sparked concern that it may spread to an international military conflict. Hezbollah has been engaged in the exchange of fire over the border between Lebanon and Israel since October.
The strike which killed Tawil followed an attack from Hezbollah days before which targeted an air traffic control base operated by Israel. The January 6 rocket attack forced thousands of Israeli citizens to evacuate along the border in northern Israel.
A top leader of Hamas, Saleh-al-Arouri, was also killed during a strike issued by Israel’s military shortly after the new year, which targeted Beirut, the capital of Lebanon. Just before that attack, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah—the secretary-general of Hezbollah—issued a warning that Israel would “regret” their actions if they led to a full-blown war against Lebanon.
Since October 7, over 130 fighters with Hezbollah have been killed by Israeli military actions. Israel’s authorities have specified that up to nine military members and four civilians have died.
