(NewsWorthy.news) – Leaders in the federal House of Representatives have announced the creation of an artificial intelligence task force, joining ongoing efforts made by Senate leaders to keep tabs on the swiftly developing technology.
The Senate Majority Leader, New York Democrat Chuck Schumer, has been spearheading many forums related to artificial intelligence in recent months. His efforts were recognized and imitated by Louisiana Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson and his colleague, another New York Democrat and the House Minority Leader, Hakeem Jeffries.
The House party leaders announced on February 20 that they are collaboratively instituting a bipartisan task force that will examine possible avenues for the federal government to take to both enable the United States to be a leader in artificial intelligence and protect the nation against potential pitfalls of the technology.
As artificial intelligence has become significantly more prevalent in daily life, there is ongoing discussion and concern about whether the technology will be a source of misinformation, major scams and threaten to replace jobs and lead to unemployment.
A total of 24 members have been appointed to the task force, with each party leader choosing 12. The task force’s leaders will be Chairman Jay Obernolte, a Republican with a master’s degree in artificial intelligence, and Co-Chairman Ted Lieu, a Democrat who has a track record of proposing legislation to regulate controversial technology like ChatGPT. Both representatives are from California.
The newly formed group will be responsible for completing a report about artificial intelligence and the role of the federal government. It will outline principles and suggestions for policies related to the United States’ response to the growing technological advancement and potential threat.
The task force’s efforts will be supported by House committees specializing in jurisdiction. In a statement, Johnson emphasized that it is “important” that members of Congress “work in a bipartisan manner” to address the impact of artificial intelligence on American culture and society.
