(Newsworthy.news) – On January 26, a church in New London, Connecticut, had both its roof and its spire collapse.
There was no church service at the time and no reports of fatalities or injuries.
A woman who was at the back of the church at the moment of the collapse didn’t report any injuries, according to reports. On Thursday evening, crews spent the late hours searching through the wreckage to ensure nobody else was there.
According to a statement made by Mayor Michael Passero, the reason for the collapse could not be immediately determined.
Reports show that as a result of the collapse of a spire on the church that is two hundred years old, the Engaging Heaven Church has begun the process of demolition. In the place where the church’s main entrance used to be, there now exists a gaping hole created by the crane brought in the next day.
According to City authorities, the old tower has been destroyed.
Demolishment of the whole church will be required, and the process might take many days to complete.
The church, which was constructed in the year 1810, is owned by Engaging Heaven Church. According to the property documents, an extension was constructed in 1975. A prominent feature in the area was the steeple that collapsed on Thursday.
On Sunday, the Garde Arts Theatre was the venue for the services of Engaging Heaven Church. The church will use the Salvation Army to carry out its business.
Jeanne Milstein, director of human resources, said that the church provides meals to around seventy individuals daily, and those in need received breakfast sandwiches that the police department supplied.
Fire Marshal Vernon Saau said that the most recent inspection performed at the church was in January of 2019 at a press conference on Friday. During that time, there had been three minor breaches that were swiftly rectified.
T
he mayor said the Coronavirus epidemic was an obstacle to the inspection procedures. Inspections are intended to be carried out every two years.
