(NewsWorthy.news) – Following a sweeping defeat in the Super Tuesday primary election, Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley has suspended her campaign.
The news came at the end of March 5, when a number of key states held primary elections that showed former president Donald Trump and Democratic President Joe Biden are the favored nominees. Haley lost every GOP vote except in Vermont, where her victory was called with a lead of four points.
During a speech given at the end of the day, the former United Nations ambassador and governor of South Carolina expressed that she has “no regrets” about giving a voice to Americans during her campaign.
Haley noted that the issues which propelled her White House bid—including national debt, big government, trends towards socialism, term limits for politicians, and maintaining allyship with Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan—are “values” she will “continue to promote.”
The candidate added that, although she did not receive “the honor” of becoming “your president,” she acknowledges that the role of a citizen in the United States “is privilege enough in itself.”
Haley’s exit effectively secures the Republican nomination for the 2024 presidential race for Donald Trump. However, she stopped short of endorsing him during her suspension speech, keeping in line with the rivalry that was built up between the two candidates during the GOP race.
Haley—who served as the ambassador to the United Nations under the Trump administration—acknowledged her opponent’s probable nomination by the Republican party come July. She expressed that she “congratulate[s]” and “wish[es] him well,” emphasizing that the United States is “too precious” to allow “our differences” to get in the way of effective leadership.
After saying that she has “always” backed the GOP presidential nominee, Haley indicated that she does not fully endorse Trump by quoting Margaret Thatcher’s advice to come to your own conclusions instead of “following the crowd.” She added her “hope” that Trump can gain the votes of Americans who had previously not supported his candidacy, saying that this is “now up to” him.
