GOP Continues Plight to Impeach Mayorkas

(Newsworthy.news) – Amid the ongoing political tension in American government and ahead of the 2024 presidential election, Republicans in the House of Representatives continue to pursue the impeachment of Alejandro Mayorkas, the Homeland Security secretary.

The efforts to remove the controversial leader began in November 2022, when Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia launched a measure to impeach him without the approval of the Republican leadership in the House.

While eight GOP representatives voted at the time to have the bill sent to committee, many of them informed Axios at the beginning of January that they will cast a similar vote of impeachment regarding Mayorkas if the GOP leadership is in support.

Some Republican representatives explained that they would change their previous votes against the motion to in favor. John Duarte of California told the outlet that his plans to change his vote were contingent on the measure not being issued “under privileged motions.”

Fellow GOP Republicans Darrell Issa of California, Don Bacon of Nebraska and Marc Molinaro of New York also voiced their plans to vote in favor of impeaching Mayorkas. Molinaro noted that, if Mayorkas had been on his payroll, he would “have fired him” by now. Bacon, who shared plans to “weigh the arguments” for and against before making a final decision, also noted that “it’s hard to defend” what he described as “the worst leadership” America has seen at the border.

According to a January 8 CNN report, GOP representatives are initiating an effort to launch the impeachment process via the House Homeland Security Committee rather than the standard route of the House Judiciary Committee. This plan has reportedly received the stamp of approval from top GOP leaders, including House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana.

However, Homeland Security told Axios via spokesperson that House Republicans are “wasting” time and taxpayer funds to push forward in what they consider a “baseless political exercise.”
