(Newsworthy.news) – The disclosure of US cyberintelligence secrets led to the sentencing of Joshua Schulte, a former CIA employee, to four decades in prison.
Schulte, a specialized computer intelligence unit member, exposed the CIA’s computer data collection techniques. Prosecutors have compared it to a digital Pearl Harbor and claimed the full depth of the harm might never be known.
Judge Jesse M. Furman stated while handing down the sentence that he had no doubt the damage was massive, implying that the complete scope of the damage would probably never be known.
Along with Chelsea Manning, Edward Snowden, and Reality Winner, Schulte is the latest American “cyber traitor.” While Snowden insisted on worrying about the government’s authority, Manning and Winner said they were worried about how the government acted.
According to reports, the CIA wasn’t giving Schulte enough attention when he was complaining about his job.
According to the prosecution, he leaked secret information due to his animosity towards the CIA’s handling of his complaints about his job. According to prosecutor Damian Williams’s statements in court filings, his grievances were disagreements with coworkers, a transfer to a different branch, and the denial of access to specific CIA systems.
A report states that Schulte’s issues started in 2015 when he quarreled with management and a colleague. Both Schulte and a coworker were relocated when Schulte sought a restraining order.
According to prosecutors, Schulte grew furious when CIA officials planned to employ a contractor to create a cyber tool that was comparable to his own.
Thus, in 2016, he disclosed sensitive material to WikiLeaks. It came out in 2017, and Schulte was arrested in 2018 for several reasons, including child porn charges and leaks. The charges against him include possessing over 10,000 photographs of child pornography and unlawfully acquiring and sharing information about the nation’s defense.
The CIA chose not to comment publicly about the legitimacy or substance of supposed intelligence papers. However, knowing that the agency’s secrets were out in the open was a sobering realization.
