(NewsWorthy.news) – A fireball illuminated the night sky above New Jersey in the early hours of April 10, following a week of natural phenomena in the region starting with the solar eclipse on April 8 and an earthquake days earlier.
The American Meteor Society reported several dozen sightings of the fireball, which is believed to be either a meteor or “falling star”, at roughly 3:45 A.M. The bright light was seen across New Jersey and some areas of New York, Connecticut and Pennsylvania. Footage from the doorbell video camera of Millville resident Michele Griffin shows the moment when the flash lit up the sky. The fireball is only shown for a few seconds before vanishing. Multiple witnesses saw a “bright green flashing ball” descending from the sky, according to reports.
At the beginning of April, California residents saw a series of fiery objects moving across the sky in a straight line at 1:30 A.M. in Moreno Valley, roughly 70 miles east of Los Angeles. Though a man filming the display suggested it was a meteor shower, others such as astrophysicist and satellite tracker Jonathan McDowell suggested it could have been debris falling from the Chinese orbital module that ferried three astronauts to the country’s Tiangong space station in November 2022.
A resident of Hackettstown in Warren County, roughly 50 miles west of New York City, who gave his name as Darren T claimed to have seen the flash of light on April 10, commenting that it was the first time he had seen a fireball like this. Christina V. of Linden, New Jersey said that after getting out of the shower at about 3:40 A.M., she saw an “almost neon” bright green color fall from the sky. She noted the lack of lengthy vapor trails and said it fell and disappeared from sight.
One commenter on a local New Jersey Facebook page suggested that it must be a meteorite due to high levels of nickel and iron magnesium burning a green color when reacting with the atmosphere. Amy Barraclough, the director of the Edelman Planetarium at Rowan University, concluded that the fireball was a very bright meteor, also known as a bolide. She explained that as the meteor falls through the Earth’s atmosphere, it reacts with oxygen, giving off the vibrant hue.
