(NewsWorthy.news) – As abortion remains one of the top issues for American voters and politicians, political experts have pointed out that the Democratic hope to use abortion bans to the detriment of the Republicans may not ruin their chances in the polls after all.
According to analyses from the last two elections—the first ones following the historic overturning of Roe v. Wade in June 2022—promises to ensure access to abortion played a role in the Democrats minimizing lost seats in the federal House of Representatives and keeping them in the majority in the Senate.
This maintaining of Democrat control stood as a bitter disappointment to Republicans who were looking forward to the so-called “red wave” of the 2022 midterm elections that would prompt more conservative leadership.
Democrats are reportedly planning to use abortion as another ticket to election success during the November 2024 presidential election, with sitting Vice President Kamala Harris already planning a tour in Wisconsin called the “reproductive freedoms tour.”
However, a recent analysis from Politico indicates that even voters who are staunch supporters of abortion access are not, in fact, shoe-ins for the Democratic vote. According to the analysis, pro-choice voters who self-identified as Republicans still supported the GOP candidates, despite the party’s traditional stance of defending the right to life.
Additionally, Politico noted that the fact that abortion was on the ballot and a key issue for a large percentage of voters did not inherently translate to Democrat wins. On the contrary, multiple Democrat candidates lost their races even with abortion access as a priority. Some Democrats won their races without abortion listed on the ballot at all.
However, this argument stands in contrast to some opinions that abortion remains an important and difficult issue standing in the way of Republican candidates. Amanda Iovino, who served as Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s polling director during the 2021 Virginia governor’s race, wrote in a recent article that there has been a “notable shift” among voters’ views on abortion and emphasized the need to “get a handle on the basics” to combat the challenging polling issue ahead.
