Ex-GOP Governor Running for Senate in Dem Stronghold State

(Newsworthy.news) – A politician who previously served as a Republican governor of Maryland recently announced that he will be running for Senate in the state largely controlled by Democrats.

Larry Hogan, who was Maryland’s governor from 2015 to 2023, released a video via YouTube on February 9 which lasted nearly three minutes and emphasized a need for the Old Line State to elect leaders who will “get back to work” and “fix” America’s “broken politics.”

Hogan explained that his Senate campaign is motivated by a desire to stop putting the same “typical partisan politicians” in office. He added that he is “fed up” with the current set-up of American politics and its innate division due to competition between parties.

Maryland’s legislature is largely controlled by Democrats, with the left-wing party running both the House and Senate as well as the offices of governor, secretary of state and attorney general. Hogan’s bid for a Senate seat left open by Ben Cardin will challenge the Democratic plans to sweep up the seat without competition.

Hogan’s election pursuits come after he initially rejected the suggestion of replacing Cardin—who is retiring—and said he was “humbled” by the endorsement of him in that role but pointed to his “repeatedly” saying that he does not “aspire” to be a senator and that his view “has not changed.”

Later, the former governor was considered as a presidential candidate for the third-party group No Labels, which is motivated by posing political challenges to candidates from both Republican and Democratic parties in general elections.

No Labels had been lobbying to receive access to a ballot throughout the United States for the general election of 2024. Coinciding with this effort, Hogan resigned from his position as the group’s co-chair in January, leading to rumors that he was planning to run for president as the No Labels candidate.

Hogan, one of a minority of GOP leaders who is openly critical of former president and top Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, has instead endorsed former South Carolina governor and United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley for the 2024 nomination.
