(NewsWorthy.news) -Former Black Lives Matter lobbyist and far-left activist Shaun King has announced his conversion to Islam. As Ramadan started, King announced in a video on Telegram that he and his wife had taken Shahada and embraced the Islamic faith and Muhammad as their “final messenger.”
King said that his heart was with the people of Gaza. He claimed to have provided meals for “thousands” of families in Gaza and vowed to do so every day of Ramadan. In October 2023 the family of two American hostages released by Hamas accused King of lying when he claimed that he frantically worked behind the scenes to negotiate their release. The family claimed in a statement they had nothing to do with the activist, either directly or indirectly.
King has a history of making controversial claims; in 2015 he was accused of lying about his race and claiming to be biracial to qualify for an Oprah Winfrey scholarship at the historically black Morehouse College. King was documented as white in a 1995 police incident involving an assault. He later claimed in response to the criticism that his father was a “light-skinned black man”.
In December 2023 the activist was banned from Instagram after publishing pro-Palestine posts accusing Israel of genocide. A Meta spokesperson said King was banned from the platform for “multiple praises” of entities that violated the company’s policies.
King previously used donor funds to buy a show dog, which he claimed he needed to purchase as a guard dog for security in response to alleged threats from white supremacists. He later returned the dog for not having enough energy. He has been accused of fraud multiple times, on one occasion by the mother of Tamir Rice, a 12-year-old killed by police in Cleveland. The mother claimed that King raised funds in her son’s name without her authorization.
The activist has worked hard to dismiss claims that Hamas raped women in the October 7 attack, despite U.N. experts saying there were grounds to believe multiple acts of rape occurred in the attack itself and against hostages in Gaza.
Before converting to Islam, King claimed since 2015 that Christmas and Easter are “tools of white supremacy.” He was expelled by the Black Lives Matter movement in 2015 due to concerns over the level of integrity in his fundraising.
